Why wave flags or banners in praise and worship?

Flags or banners are used as a standard of a Sovereign or a Lord, serving as a rallying point in a battle. It bears some device or motto and displays a profession. Christians are called to be good soldiers for Jesus Christ (Yeshua HaMashiach) (2 Tim 2 v 2-4). So it is not unusual that God would instruct us to raise up a flag or banner in HIS NAME.

Flags and banners as standards are used for Praise, Worship and Warfare. They display God’s Glory and the Heart-Cry of His children.

A standard is something which stands, or is held upright to indicate a rallying point. A standard can be a flag/banner held on a pole which symbolises an established truth. We can display a standard or flag, say for example “God has shown Himself to be strong on our behalf. For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is perfect towards Him” (2 Chronicles 16:9a)

We can lift up a flag with scripture on it.  When we do this, we are using a banner/flag as a symbol of the truth of God’s Word. Thou has given a banner (standard) to them that fear Thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth (Psalm 60v4). The Word of God is powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword!

We lift high a flag or banner as a Prayer (prayer is simply communicating with God.) We speak to God through Praise and Worship using flags, banners and standards. A person can offer up a prayer to God by waving a flag to communicate the cry of his/her heart without saying a word!

In spiritual warfare when a flag, banner or standard is raised in the Lord’s Name, it declares His authority over a situation and areas in a life, where victory is needed (Isaiah 31v9)  ie: in a personal situation:- Yahweh Rapha my Healer: Yahweh Yireh  my Provider; Jesus the Prince of Peace, or Yahweh Shalom – the Lord my Peace.
